I'm not sure that this will cut it as it will days a very long time to adjust to the proper time. Is there any way to speed this up?

Stop the NTP daemon and restart it so that it uses the "-x" option. From ntpd(8):

When you restart it make sure it's done with all the CLI options it has now, with the addition of the "-x".
