As a side note, the most recent CVS version of smartmontools (ports sysutils/smartmontools) has support for checking the SMART status of drives behind a 3Ware 7xxx/8xxx controller (/dev/twe).
I'm also working on supporting the 9xxx controllers (/dev/twa), and hope to have that included by the next official release (which should then make it into ports).
