Can't you use "reboot -d" for this? or maybe "reboot -qd".
Never tried it, but it seems like it makes sense in this situation.
Sounds like it would, but with the one file system being effectively wedged, I'm not sure if it would work ... I'll try it next time though, since the other alternative is a cold boot, which gives zip :(
