I just sent another backtrace of a panic which occurs if I start artsd while the USB device is plugged in securely and the hardware isn't being disturbed in any way. Perhaps this isn't audio specific either, I don't know. artsd and the USB audio driver don't get along at all, but if I play directly to the audio device I can play stably for hours provided I don't move the computer around (which is a nuisance, since it's a laptop...)
