I needed to employ this workaround.

With my DB815EEA m/b with i815 chip set, I can report utter failure to
run X - nothing but a black screen each time the X server starts,
accompanied with 100% X server cpu utilisation. No errors in
/var/log/XFree, other than is appears to stop rather abruptly after:

(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libddc.a
(II) Module ddc: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.1.0, module version = 1.0.0
