The other machine (winnt laptop) is set t0 9600 8-N-1 I had originally tried
with dialup in the /etc/ttys. I don't see the getty process running. I
thought this was odd but I assumed that the process was not spawned untill
data was detected on the relevant port

Have you also configured the other machine at 9600?
My configuration works even with type 'dialup' instead of 'vt100'.

Do you see the getty process running on ttyd1? If so you are fine.
The problem must be on the other side. What is your configuration
there?
