I had a search through the PR database, and came across this: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=bin/147430 freebsd-update(8) not updating /usr/src/UPDATING I appears to be a long outstanding issue (from june 2010). Not really critical, but certainly confusing.
