I've tried buildworld, as well as one one-off makes I showed above. Only after I hacked things (just did simple mkdir(1)s and make installs) so that lzma could actually install and set WITHOUT_RESCUE (syscons was getting hung up on ncurses symbols), did buildworld actually go through.
