This is a very late reply, but just for the archives ... You can do the update in two steps. Please see this entry in /usr/src/UPDATING: 20080123: To upgrade to -current after this date, you must be running FreeBSD not older than 6.0-RELEASE. Upgrading to -current from 5.x now requires a stop over at RELENG_6 or RELENG_7 systems. So, basically you can go from 5.5 to 7.2 (or 7-stable), and then to 8.0 (or 8-stable).
