I minor inconvenience for the time being. fsck hasn't been thought about getting partition types from gpart, so that it can do a best-effort attempt at guessing which variant to run. For now, you need to be explicit: fsck -t ufs /dev/ad0s1a Alternatively, add an entry to /etc/fstab.
