In my opinion, and that of the author of tuning(7), yes. I highly recommend that you read tuning(7), and carefully consider the points made therein as to whether your single slice setup is wise. Just because Gentoo or $OTHER_POPULAR_LINUX_DISTRIBUTION does something a certain way doesn't mean that it's right (of course, the same applies to the FreeBSD way of doing things, but often it is right :) ).
