Edit the xorg.conf file to match the native resolution of your notebook screen. For example, something like this:
I've done that already. Native is 800x600, and I put that in /etc/X11/XF86Config. When I do startx, it pulls from that file (I see it saying "loading from /etc/X11/XF86Config" ....
