When xdm starts, xconsole gets started, too, on my machine,

Keep in mind that /dev/console may only be readable by root. You might have to change permissions on the device, or perhaps launch xconsole as the root user. There may be other ways to get around this. I just throw this into the mix as a problem that you may encounter.


You uncomment this line in /etc/fbtab

#/dev/ttyv0     0600    /dev/console

and start an xterm with '-c' IIRC
