You'll have to recompile the kernel with SMP support. If you don't want to compile your own kernel, you can use SMP, located in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf. If you don't have that, you don't have your kernel sources installed. See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/current-stable. html for more information.
