Aha! I had to choose 'USB Printer #1 (no reset)" to get it to work
As I suspected, it was right in front of me... but knowing where to copy the PPD was crucial. Apparently everyone assumes this will be there or will be automatically installed by something.
Well you know what they say about building someone "fool proof" :-)
