I am wondering, why mailing list is the official support mechanism (as opposed to newsgroups)? Ruby seems to be supported through newsgroups quite nicely.
You mention Gnus as your newsreader. Try using it for mail then. It's quite workable. Then you get all the benefits of news that you need.
