i have such a system. It was running previous FreeBSD-5.x versions and is now running FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE-p2.
There were no problems to get everything working. The SATA controller works out of GENERIC.

as you can see, i have only 2.66GHz and 80GB HD's.
