How about this, then:
Has *anyone* successfully used an NVidia card with the most recent
x11/nvidia-driver port in AGP (as opposed to PCI) mode?

Yes. Just installed the latest from nvidia.
after boot and login
#sysctl hw.nvidia.agp.status.status
hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: disabled
However after fire off a X server..
#sysctl hw.nvidia.agp.status.status
hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: enabled
Are you using xorg or XFree86?
