As that same FAQ says, FAM support is now enabled by default. If you do not configure FAM correctly, and you have TCP blackhole enabled, you will get these huge hangs at login time. You can either configure FAM, or recompile gnomevfs2 without FAM support, then you can use TCP blackhole all you want.
