Matthew, I followed your suggestion to rename it zzzswatch.sh and that solved the problem - it now starts swatch. (My curiosity still remains as to what wasn't ready or which other process was clobbering swatch, but I don't have the time to chase this rabbit). Thank you for the guidance!
