I have the resolutions in XF86Config and I've tried using ctrl + alt + [+/-]. It will only allow 2 resolutions. I have several in the XF86Config file. I haven't checked the log file you mentioned but I will do so. Actually, as I am new to FreeBSD (UNIX altogether) I didn't realize it existed.

How do you try to change the resolution? Do you just start xfree86 and hit [ctrl] [alt] [+] or have you modified /etc/X11/XF86Config? Any error messages in /var/log/XFree86.0.log?
