pkg_add -r will install any dependencies that are missing, but it won't upgrade any earlier versions of dependencies it finds already installed. For that, use 'portupgrade -PPNa' (which, despite the program name, only operated on packages with that combination of flags) -- but make sure you download a freshly build /usr/ports/INDEX file, or portupgrade won't know what the latest versions of things are. Of course, you'll have to 'pkg_add -r portupgrade' to install portupgrade the first time.
