I want to add that I have a machine that did that once in awhile. As soon as I see it, I look at my switch and the NIC has switched into half-duplex. An ifconfig still shows full-duplex. I would power down and reboot and it went away for awhile. After having done this 3 or 4 times, I powered it down, reseated the NIC and it has been a little over three weeks since it flipped modes on me.
