Well, this seems to solve my problem. That is, Windows no longer sees an extra disk, so I guess it won't try to format it! Now I feel happy about letting other people use the computer again... death threats wear out on 10 year olds so quickly... On the other hand, Partition Magic won't run any more - I get "library or disk not open" which seems to me like a typically uninformative Windows error message. Perhaps it's not even connected.
