/dev/ad1s1 what? a, d, e, f,g ??
Do I specify? I am using the whole drive. should I change it to /dev/ad1s1a?

asuming that you have done the whole fdisk/disklabel/newfs you can list the contents of /dev thus, ls /dev to find out. It will be ad1s1d or something like that
