I had something pretty similar to this with some Compaq computers my
employer bought at auction. As I recall, I ended up having to fiddle
with/turn off DMA in BIOS in order to get it to work.

And IIRC, my problem was similar. Either a fallback
to PIO mode, or just changing IDE cables ... a tad
strange, but I remember it had something to do
with the HDD and its controller.....
