I had this problem and traced it down to the fact that the default location where clamav puts its socket is wrong. After editing /usr/local/etc/clamav.conf so that LocalSocket looked like:
# Path to the local socket. The daemon doesn't change the mode of the # created file (portability reasons). You may want to create it in a directory # which is only accessible for a user running daemon. LocalSocket /var/run/clamav/clamd.sock And the permissions on that directory are sorted (eg. clamav:clamav) it all worked out. Additionally, the logfile holds a wealth of info about what is going on.
