When you plug in the drive, is it recognized by the OS? It should print some lines to the console and to /var/log/messages. Also, some USB flash drives seem to be just quirky. I have something called Travelling Disk, and attempts to mount it can fail 10 times in a row and succeed 11th time (admittedly, this is with a year-old 4.7-STABLE system).
