The GIMP can take screenshots and has a nice GUI.
Alternatively you could take a look at "xwd" in combination with ImageMagick's

	"% image type bitmap <file>" and it always left a whiteframe 
	left to crop.

Looks like:

1.  Click File menu
2.  Click Acquire
3.  Select "screen shot" and follow prompts.
