If you computer can run 10.3 I would got that way because this version is now is more *nix like than ever. It has X11 built into so you can now run X11, and there are hundreds of ports of BSD programs. And it stable.

Although OS X is partially derived from FreeBSD, there is no Mac port yet. NetBSD and OpenBSD do though, check them out.
