Gave it a shot, however, I still get a message that the link is a directory. It is not allowing me to "unlink" the symlink. Any other suggestions?

Perhaps they are using a Microsoft brower-based FTP. It doesn't seem to "see" symlinks. Can you wean them to a real client?
