I do not have an .xserverrc. The .xinitrc looks like this without the comments: #!/bin/sh xset m 10 3 xmodmap .xmodmaprc bbkeys & exec blackbox and .xmodmaprc ! ! Swap Caps_Lock and Control_L ! remove Lock = Caps_Lock remove Control = Control_L keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L add Lock = Caps_Lock add Control = Control_L I did not change this since many years but the behaviour of X changes sometimes.
