This does make the desktop work again :) I followed the advice and am back in the saddle. Some things failed to compile, but I used -x parameter to not update them. I will track those ports later. I appreciate the help and advice provided. It appears that a new pcre update hits the ports later. I wonder if it bypasses the original problem.
