No. Our mailserver does not resolve DNS/rDNS and I can send mail
without problems to freebsd.org.


reverse dns is definately a good thing to have in place if you want your mail to be accepted by remote MTA's.

I didn't see the OP post an error message in this thread, that would be a good place to start.
