portmaster doesn't have the same switches as portupgrade. Or, being more precise, it has some of the same option flags, but they mean something completely different. For example, -R.
the only significant difference is that portmaster will run through and prompt you for all of the 'make config' options first and then go about it's business unattended from that point on...
The -c or -C options for portupgrade do that, but they aren't on by default.
