Um.... yes. That's what the '-retro' flag does: reintroduce the grid pattern etc. that lets you confirm X is responsive, rather than the new and really not at all improved behaviour of just throwing up a black screen which is remarkably similar to some common failure modes. Try starting up a window manager or similar. It might be that nothing at all is actually wrong...
