I'd start by reading "The Not So Short Introduction to Latex": http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf There's a useful wiki available at: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX that covers common questions, but for what you're doing, I'd suggest logging onto comp.tex.tex.
