He has to use a null-modem cable. The wires sending and receiving data are fixed, so one cannot change these using software. To the original poster: Did you plan to run a getty/login on the serial link? That would be messy, since login on system A will writing data to login on system B and vice versa. I think creating a PPP link between the two and using IP is the way to go.
