What version of FreeBSD is this? If it's 8.x, you have to scan with the wlan0 device. I've seen lots of weird and nasty things happen when trying to manipulate the actual ndis0 device under 8. ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev ndis0 ifconfig wlan0 up scan
