With any PS/2 mouse that is properly supported by moused, you should use the auto protocol in your XF86Config. The reason for this specific problem is that the MouseSystems protocol (which is the obsolete protocol that used to be used for 3 button mice) does not have a Z axis. The auto protocol will work just fine though.
