You need to create a kernel config file and give it a name like MYKERNEL
Place this file in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/
If you use amd64 then it needs to go in /usr/src/sys/amd64/conf/

If you named that file KRNL then the command needs to be:
make buildkernel KERNCONF=KRNL
