OK, here's the lates on this, I ran fc-cache with the -v option. The last
thing it prints out before hanging is:

fg-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi":


Cool, I thoguht thta's the direcotry with the problem. So, I went and looke
at ut. Foirst, there are _no_ symlinks in thta direcotry, second, each and
every file in that directory ahs a last modifed date of March 19, almost a
year ago. Seem unliklye that they are the culprit.

What should I check next?
