there is definitely something wrong in this setup

i thing second line should be ad8s1 not ad8!

OOPS!  I cut and pasted incorrectly.
      Name    Status  Components
mirror/gm0s1  COMPLETE  ad0s1

ad8s1 Rudy

simply bsdlabel -B both ad0s1 and ad8s1, and get both bootable
