Using your computer under root account is the Windows way of doing things. But even in that world it is now strongly recommended to create a non-privileged account and use it for most tasks. In the Unix world, root is most commonly reserved for system administration tasks. Run adduser (without any arguments) to enter a simple interactive process of adding a new user - and don't use root when you don't need it.
