'cvsup' is used as the first step when upgrading. Then you need to recompile and install everything too. This is all documented fairly well in the FreeBSD Handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cutting-edge.html Read all of that carefully before going any further.
