Here is another clue.  Something seems to be wrong with the
loopback:

ripple# ping localhost

Yes that was the problem.  I did this:

ifconfig lo0 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0


Make sure you have this line in /etc/rc.conf:

ifconfig_lo0="inet 127.0.0.1"


This is new with 7.0?  I have the above in none of many rc.conf's 4.11 --> 6.2.
