well, I'm not sure how FreeBSD 4.2 is "the latest version available from a commercial distribution" for one thing.

Isn't one of the benefits of open source OSes that you can customize the kernel to meet your needs? Seems to me this is not a very meaningful comparison. This seems like a pretty generic task: it's hard to see how FreeBSD came in dead last.
