One of my machines will do this if I have no devices on any one of the IDE channels. For example, if I take my CD-ROM out, then the second IDE channel is empty and FreeBSD will pause for a moment when detecting the hard drives on boot. This only happens with one of my machines. The motherboard on that is a Asus P3V133 (I think) with a VIA Apollo MVP3 chipset. Maybe it is a small issue with some/all VIA chipsets?
