On my hardware (ASUS board / Plextor CDRW) I need to specify the block size with the 'bs' switch as in $ dd bs=2048 if=/dev/acd0c of=x1 or I get the same results you do above. I'm not sure what happens if you use different block sizes, but the above allows me to e.g. make copies of Linux and BSD ISOs.
