You need to add one line ("device atapicam") to the kernel config file and recompile the kernel to enable access to CD and DVD devices through /dev/cd0 See section 16.6.9 in the Handbook, and also section 8 for recompiling a kernel. Installing K3B will provide a NERO-like GUI interface for burning CDs, should you prefer to do it that way.
